Polyvagal theory is a framework, developed by Dr Stephen Porges, for understanding how your nervous system moves between states of safety, stress, and shutdown. Parts of its underlying physiology are still debated in the research literature. What has made it durable in practice is that the map it offers matches lived experience closely, and it points to interventions that work.

For busy professionals, that practicality is the point. The framework explains why willpower alone cannot make you calm, why some days you cope with everything and others with nothing, and why the path back to steadiness runs through the body rather than the intellect.

The Core Idea

Your autonomic nervous system is always assessing one question beneath conscious awareness. Am I safe. Based on the answer, it shifts you into one of three broad states, each with its own physiology and its own felt experience.

The Three States

State One
Ventral Vagal: Safe and Connected

This is regulation. When your system reads the environment as safe, you feel calm, present, and open to connection. You think clearly, respond rather than react, and recover easily from small stresses. This is the state effective work and genuine rest both depend on.

State Two
Sympathetic: Mobilised

When your system detects threat, it mobilises. Heart rate rises, energy surges, focus narrows. This is fight or flight. In short bursts it is useful, sharpening you for a real demand. Sustained, it becomes anxiety, urgency, and the sense of being permanently switched on.

State Three
Dorsal Vagal: Shutdown

When threat feels overwhelming or inescapable, the system drops into shutdown. Energy withdraws. You feel flat, numb, disconnected, or exhausted. For high performers this often looks like sudden depletion after a long push, the body pulling the emergency brake.


Why This Matters for Professionals

Much of professional life is spent oscillating between mobilised and shut down, with too little time in the safe and connected state where you actually function best. You push through in sympathetic activation, then crash into dorsal shutdown, and call the whole cycle being busy.

Understanding this explains a lot. Why you cannot concentrate when wired. Why rest sometimes leaves you flat instead of restored. Why the goal is not to stay calm at all times, but to return to the ventral state reliably after the demand passes.

The Vagus Nerve and the Return to Calm

Central to the framework is the vagus nerve, which runs from the brainstem through the body and influences how readily you return to a calm state. You cannot command your nervous system to relax through thought. But you can influence it through the body, and that is where practical regulation begins.

The most accessible lever is the breath. A slow exhale, longer than the inhale, engages the calming branch of the nervous system and signals safety to the whole system. This is why a few deliberate breaths can shift your state in a way that telling yourself to calm down never will.
